Longtime Over-the-Rhine Residents Use BLINK to Draw Attention to Community Inclusion Through Art

Residents Hoping BLINK Opens Eyes to Deeper Issues

Time For An UPdate? was a multimedia art installation mounted during BLINK 2019, the only exhibit based entirely upon the creative work of Over-the-Rhine residents from design to execution.

A collaboration among 10 Over-the-Rhine residents, Miami University students, and local artists, this public art installation included:

  • A two-channel animated film projected on the north wall of the building
  • A light-activated storefront window installation
  • Live performances by six neighborhood residents dressed in LED-lit costumes designed by our student partners at UC DAAP Fashion Design

Community members, several who live in the building where the work took place, came together to generate an artwork that asks:

How can we create healthy and equitable growth in our communities?

What possibilities might blossom when we all uplift and support one another?

Time For An UPdate? builds upon the visual imagery and 40 year history of affordable housing advocacy by the Over-the-Rhine People’s Movement.

This artwork vitalized and illuminated a twenty-year-old, community-generated mural on the north face of 1300 Vine St, known as buddy’s place. The mural came to life with color and movement, while a new animated narrative ran on the huge blank brick wall above.

Located at one of the highest foot traffic corners in Over-the-Rhine, buddy’s place is an affordable housing apartment building owned by Over-the-Rhine Community Housing. It is a landmark in the history of people’s activism in the neighborhood.

Just two blocks from Washington Park, Time for an UPdate? was at the center of BLINK’s Over-the-Rhine zone.
